Out of Season (1998)

This is the first in what will prove to be a series of “lesbian movie” posts.

Tagline: Love comes when you least expect it.
Tagline should be: As far as lesbian movies go, this one ain’t half bad.

Best line: “Have you ever kissed a woman right after she finishes a cigarette . . . a hint of whiskey on her breath?” “that taste . . . so good it could kill you.”

This movie is about a "wanderer" who comes to coastal New Jersey to help her dying uncle, learns a lesson or two about life and love, and then packs up his shit and moves when he crokes.

For those of you looking for lesbian cliché in your movies, this one's got plenty. The main character packs pocket knife, wears a leather jacket (in all but three scenes), and uses an army sack as luggage (must be a dyke). Her true cliché appearance is thrown off by the fact that she’s sporting high-waisted “mom jeans” in most of the movie. There is a cute scene when her friends come to town and educate her uncle on the categories of lesbians (baby dyke, luppie, etc.). Two of her friends, of course, are planning their commitment ceremony, though this is only mentioned in passing (Hallelujah!). Oh, and i can't forget to mention that the main character is also a vegetarian!

For those of you looking for sex in your lesbian movies (HI EMILY!), this one's got a scene and it actually shows more than I was expecting. I still can't decide if it was "hot" though.

The thing i enjoyed most about this movie was the fact that, unlike most lesbian movies, the acting wasn't totally atrocious.

Ratings (out of 5 stars) = 4 (on the lesbian movie scale); 1 (on the general movie scale)
